Sobre Esta Praia is a bilingual (Portuguese/English) set of eight poems, meditations on the coast of the Pacific, translated by Jonathan Griffin. Jorge de Sena (1919-1978), widely regarded as the foremost Portuguese poet and man of letters since the Second World War, authored about a hundred books, including over a dozen volumes of poetry and numerous translations of poets like Dickinson and Cavafy, during his life as a civil engineer in Portugal and, beginning in 1959, as a writer-in-exile in Brazil and the United States, where at the time of his death he headed the Comparative Literature Program at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Of this sequence of eight poems referring to deserted and semideserted shores near Santa Barbara, California, seven were written, as the dates of them show, from the 27th of September through the 24th of October, 1972, and on the 6th of December that year the last poem arrived to join them. All the eight poems are hitherto strictly unpublished, except two, the first and the last, which came out in the review Nova, Winter 1975/76.From reader reviews:
